Seems that I ignored the last EWIGKEIT CD ("Radio Ixtlan"),casting it aside based on a "not my thing" sentiment, probably without even listening to it. I just may have to dig that bugger back up now that I have done a little reveling in "Conspiritus".
What gets lost in all this talk of the ambient, the spaced out, and James Fogarty's journey from black metal (generally speaking) beginnings is that at least on "Conspiritus" the rock rolls along with real guitar riffing and rolling bass lines. Fogarty may be classified as "out there" to those with little interest in music that falls outside of metal circles, but this ain't ULVER either (and yeah, I dig "Blood Inside" too, but that is not the point). Think less about minimalism and lofty sonic dreamscapes and more about rock-based techno slams, industrial dabbling, gothic coloring, and English pop goodness, and you will have a much better idea of what to expect with "Conspiritus". The comparisons to PINK FLOYD and KILLING JOKE may smack of sacrilege to some, but there is merit in pointing out the occasional similarity (certain vibes, vocal intonations, etc),as some sense can be made of it by those outside of style-junkie circles (like me).
I mean if you can't hum along to the fat hook of "It's Not Reality" or get your industrial groove on to "The Thought Police", then maybe "Conspiritus" really isn't your thing. Sure there's plenty of spacey organ sounds and classic English melancholia, but on "Conspiritus" that does not translate into black fingernail polish and slit wrists. Live a little, would ya? And if Orwellian lyrical themes about big brother and government control ring your bell, then you'll really be cookin' with gas.
